Prepare yourself for leadership positions: VC charges Students’ Union leaders

The Vice-Chancellor, Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti, Professor Olufemi Adeoluwa has charged the new Executive members of the Students’ Union to see the advantage of being elected to lead, as an ample opportunity to groom themselves for leadership positions in future. Professor Adeoluwa gave the charge at the swearing-In ceremony of the new Students’ Union Executive Council.

While urging the new leaders to see leadership as a responsibility, which can only be achieved through purposeful vision and determination to succeed against all odds, the Vice Chancellor expressed confidence in their ability to demonstrate true leadership and commitment to moving their fellow students and the institution forward.

The Vice Chancellor tasked them to believe and know that much is being expected from them. He said “People want to see how you behave and what you do, therefore strive to justify the confidence reposed in you all.”

Professor Adeoluwa decried the situation in which students after becoming the President, Speaker or any executive of the Students’ Union would cease attending lectures. He said “Please let this leadership not be like that. Let this leadership be committed to academic work. You should not allow unionism to interfere with your studies because first and foremost, the reason you are here is to study”,

Professor Adeoluwa, however, expressed joy and said  “ I feel that the future of the country is great, listening to the speech of the new President this afternoon, I feel within me that I am listening to the future Obama of this country”.

The Vice Chancellor who called on the entire students to give their new leaders necessary support and cooperation, in order to succeed in office, assured the new leaders “that his administration will give all necessary support for them to achieve their vision and goals”.

Earlier in his inauguration speech, the new President of BOUESTI Students’ Union, Mr. Tosin Aterigbade, promised that neither rights nor power would be abused during his administration. He also disclosed that he was ready to add more value to students’ unionism and push forward the frontier of Students’ Union activities in the citadel of learning.

He stressed that his agenda would be to ensure the good welfare of students,  provide structured and support system for students’ engagements in entrepreneurial activities entrepreneurship and advocate the democratic rights of students.
