A soccer fiesta among students tagged BOUESTI champions league cup has kicked off at the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti. The football competition which was fashioned after the the opular UEFA Champions league had various clubs taking part and adopting the names of top European football clubs in order to add glamour to the event.
Addressing soccer enthusiasts at the kick-off ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Olufemi Adeoluwa stated that the essence of sports was to ensure wellness and fitness of the institution’s students at all times. He reaffirmed his commitment towards sports development in the institution.
He expressed his readiness to engage the students in sporting activities to prevent them from engaging in social vices and urged them to take advantage of the institution’s sports potentials by partaking in sporting activities to make the University and the nation proud.
He lauded the Students’ Union Executives for coming up with the initiative of introducing the football competition and charged them to look into the possibility of introducing other sporting activities with a promise to provide the needed support.
In his remarks, the Dean, Students’ Affairs of the University, Dr.Oyedokun Ajayi described the completion as timely as it is geared towards breeding future Austin Okochas and Kanu Nnwakwos for the University and Nigeria at large. The competition organised by the Students’ Union Government of the institution as part of events lined up to gainfully occupy the students and develop their interest in sporting activities.
According to the Director of Sports of the Students’ Union Government, Comrade Timileyin Oladepo, fourteen clubs named after different clubs in Europe are taking part in the round rubbing competition and the winning team would go home with cash gifts and a trophy.
